Review: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
Published: May 8, 2012
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Pages: 544
Series: The Mortal Instruments #5
My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

My Review:   "It's not that," said Magnus. "There are some people--people the universe seems to have singled out for special destinies. Special favors and special torments. God knows we're all drawn toward what's beautiful and broken; I have been, but some people cannot be fixed. Or if they can be, it's only by love and sacrifice so great that it destroys the giver."

I think I just about died after I finished this and now City of Heavenly Fire isn't coming out until March of 2014? Is Cassandra Clare trying torture everyone?

This Mortal Instruments book is actually one of my favorites (the other two are City of Bones and City of Glass). My heart had been shattered way too many times in this book and I think that's why I love it.

This book was full of romance between almost all of the characters even Sebastian. The only relationship that wasn't screwed up in this book was probably Maia and Jordan's but most of everyone's relationship problems were fixed by the end of this book. MOST. Not all. So that just makes the wait even more impossible to bear.

How can you like a character but hate them at the same time? Seems unlikely right but I'm actually not sure how I feel about Sebastian anymore. Sure he wants to destroy the world; he's half demon, evil, a murderer, and EVIL! But he's also lonely and he showed kindness to Clary at some points...ok I think the bad outweighs the good but I still like him.

  2. I loved this one too. City of Glass was probably my favorite, it was just so epic.
I also have a weird thing with Sebastian. In City of Glass I really liked him as a character... and then he turned out to be a twisted maniac and somehow I still liked him. Ha.
